Castletown is a townland overlooking Rathdowney, painted in pastels on A2 180 GSM paper. Marcus Goodbody was the landlord of Castletown during the mid 19th century. The Castle once belonged to a family called Criffin, who were more associated with nearby Co. Kilkenny, as they are mentioned in an inquisition taken in the reign of Charles 1. The area was called Castletown Criffin, to distinguish it from other Castletowns in Upper Ossory. The Castle remains are as you see here, a side wall of 25ft high x 35ft wide x 51/2 feet thick at ground level.
