Rathdowney (Painting)
Rathdowney in Irish means Rath Domhnaigh, Rathdowney takes its name from a rath which existed to the north of the town and Downey or Dowhnaigh is Irish for church, or Tamhnach, a green field. Once governed by the old Irish Gaelic clan, the Fitzpatrick’s during the 17th century, it became home to the Prior family and one Thomas Prior who was instrumental in setting up the R.D.S. in Dublin.
